Fantastic! In the mid 70s we were only 30 years since WW2 but organised jazz or even big bands in schools were unheard of. You couldn't even study jazz at college/uni in the UK till about 1990.

Another PYO FP on the Kelvin ensemble committee. Nick Baughan led PYO 2016 to 2018Meet Kelvin No. 6!

"I'm Nick, and I am from Kinross in Scotland. This year I am in charge of the Kelvin website (kelvin-ensemble.co.uk), which involves making sure everyone is able to sign up for auditions, buy tickets online, and see our wonderful performances from previous years!

I’m about to start my second year of Medicine at UofG and I’m really looking forward to returning to Kelvin and getting to meet all our new members! I love playing as part of Kelvin because it’s very friendly, social, and you get to play a huge variety of music! It is also such a great way to meet up with people who have similar interests outside your course.

I enjoy listening to a wide range of music, particularly from musicals and films, and my favourite artists would have to include Vampire Weekend, Coldplay, and Billy Joel! Outside of Kelvin, I am really into running and cycling."

Well done Sophie - PYO soloist in 2018 and now member of the Kelvin ensemble committeeMeet Kelvin No. 4!

"¡Hola!
We’re Eve and Sophie, this year’s Brass, Woodwind and Percussion managers. You’ll see us at auditions, in rehearsal taking attendance and eating/sharing rich tea biscuits with ya’ll. We’ll even send you little emails to inform you on all the things happening within Kelvin and the BWP section. We’re both percussionists but fear not, we aren't bias (well, sometimes) and are more than happy to help you with any queries! Come talk to us, have a blether and a wee rich tea biscuit, send us an email, slide into our DM’s – whatever floats your boat! Although you might not be able to see us, we will almost definitely be behind that big pile of jingly/bangy instruments in the corner of the hall. We’d love to get to know our fellow BWP crew. But first, let us introduce ourselves individually…
Hello there, I’m Sophie. I, as you know, play percussion but I also play violin (I know; shocking). I study Chemistry at Glasgow and am in my second year, so fingers crossed it won’t go horribly horribly wrong. In the picture above, I’m the one with the shorter short brown hair and questionable blue top. You’ll find me either trying to carry instruments bigger than me or losing count during my 50-100 bars rest. Either way, I'll be making a fool out myself..
Ciao! My name is Eve, the one sporting the exquisite Kelvin Ensemble sweatshirt that you too could wear if you join our marvellous family! I am a second year vet med student/professional doggo lover at Glasgow University, and asides stroking dogs I like tasty chords and tasty coffee. Having only played in wind bands and such, the Kelvin Ensemble was my first experience of being in a symphony orchestra. If you feel you might not be able to sit through a strings-heavy, 45 minute symphony, I can assure you it is possible and you will come out the other side with a new love and appreciation of classical music.
Maybe more important than the music we play is the family we make here at Kelvin. So if you’re a funky flautist, a wholesome hornist, a quirky clarinetist, or a dandy drummer, we definitely want to be your friend. Come to the auditions: it will be lots of fun and there will be lots of food!
We hope to see you at our open rehearsal this term, and remember: keep eating your biscuits kids.
¡Adiós!"
