On 21 August 2025, the Perth Youth Orchestra brought a captivating programme to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which included an outstanding performance of Cécile Chaminade’s Flute Concertino in D major, Op. 107. The historic setting of Greyfriars Kirk, with its resonant stone walls and sparkling acoustic, lent a luminous sheen to the orchestra’s sound, making every phrase shimmer with clarity.

The soloist, Kirk Robb, demonstrated a masterful command of Chaminade’s lyrical and virtuosic writing. From the opening cadenza-like passages to the playful flourishes of the finale, his tone was warm, fluid, and assured. The acoustic of Greyfriars allowed his flute lines to soar with effortless brilliance, while never overpowering the sensitive orchestral support provided by his peers.

Under the baton of Mrs Lorna McGovern, the orchestra gave poised and responsive accompaniment, shaping the textures with care and highlighting the Concertino’s elegance. Mrs McGovern’s direction ensured a seamless balance, allowing the dialogue between soloist and ensemble to come through with both precision and charm.

What was especially moving was the recognition of Robb’s artistry by his fellow musicians. The orchestra’s attentiveness and their clear admiration for his playing created a palpable atmosphere of respect and camaraderie. It was not only a fine interpretation of Chaminade’s much-loved showpiece, but also a moment that celebrated the shared craft and spirit of youthful music-making at its highest level.

This performance confirmed both Robb’s talent as a flautist of exceptional promise and the Perth Youth Orchestra’s continued reputation for producing performances of artistry and maturity well beyond their years.
