DESCRIPTION:Perth Youth Orchestra and the choir and organist of St John’s Kirk for a great civic occasion and music that lifts the roof of this historic building. \nThe annual Festival Service has continued since the Festival’s early years and is a great tradition of the city’s Arts Festival. \nThe talented musicians of Perth Youth Orchestra\, led by Lorna McGovern\, join the musicians of the church to make Perth alive with music as we celebrate together. It is always an inspirational and uplifting event and a highlight of the Festival.

DESCRIPTION:Perth Youth Orchestra was founded in 1962 and has showcased generations of talented young musicians. For over 40 years\, PYO has performed in Edinburgh during the Festival Fringe\, delighting audiences with dynamic and engaging concerts. \nThe orchestra has enjoyed a long association with Greyfriars Kirk\, where it has regularly showcased its diverse repertoire in this historic venue. \nTonight’s performance includes Ziek – Concerto for Percussion Solo\, Movement 3 (Zoë Neave); Chaminade – Concertino for Flute (Kirk Robb); pieces from Stravinsky and Greig; and orchestral extracts from Superman\, Pirates of the Caribbean\, Wicked and the Greatest Showman.

It offers members valuable orchestral experience through concerts\, tours\, and collaborations\, fostering musical excellence and passion in Perth and beyond. \nTonight’s programme includes: Monti’s Czardas for violin (soloist Finlay Rutherford)\, Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto 2nd movement (soloist Joe Rogers)\, Finlandia (Sibelius)\, Sentimental Sarabande from Simple Symphony for String Orchestra 3rd movement (Britten)\, and Brahms’ Symphony No 1 4th movement. \nWe finish with a selection of contemporary pieces\, including Hoedown\, A Touch of Jazz\, Into the Storm\, Opening Night and Loch Lomond.
