National Association of Youth Orchestras

The National Association of Youth Orchestras was formed in 1961 in order to represent youth orchestras throughout the UK and to foster their development. Its membership is open to all such organisations including student orchestras, chamber orchestras, symphonic, wind and jazz orchestras and chamber music ensembles, whether independent or under the control of local authorities or music services.


Perform in Perth

Perform in Perth is an annual festival of music, speech and dance. Each year around 3,000 performers take part in the two week festival which opens in the second week of March. The new working title, Perform in Perth was introduced in autumn 2003 to capture the wide range of performance opportunities for our competitors in the areas of music, dance and speech.

Fair City Singers

The Fair City Singers, an eighty strong independent choir for 11-17 year olds from Perth in Scotland has been entertaining audiences for almost fourteen years. Aiming to encourage choral music while giving children as varied vocal experience as possible, The Fair City Singers regularly stage their own concerts and stage shows, broadcast on radio and TV, undertake overseas summer tours and give concerts for charity. Their musical director is Marion Neilson and their accompanist is Martin Neilson.


National Youth Orchestra of Scotland

NYOS runs residential courses for successful candidates for The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland, The National Children's Orchestra of Scotland and The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland. In addition there are training and repertoire courses for those students who show ability but who do not attain entry to the main orchestras.

Perth Symphony Orchestra

Perth Orchestral Society was founded in 1951 and its playing members, Perth Symphony Orchestra, gave their first concert in 1953. Allan Young, conductorFor almost fifty years the orchestra has performed two regular concerts each year, and is often invited to give other concerts, for example for charity. Today it has around 50 playing members with a professional conductor and leader.

Perth Youth Orchestra plays at the Inaugural Service of the Perth Festival of the Arts. Many of our players can also be heard during the festival - from 15 May - 26 May 2002- at the series of school lunchtime concerts in St John's Kirk (admission free).

CHANSONS

Chansons is a versatile choir, based in Perth, which has been up and running since 1979. Chansons, directed by Howard Duthie, performs a wide variety of music to a high standard and are equally at home in an intimate or a grand setting, from drawing room to stage. Their music ranges from classical to folk, opera to musicals. Howard DuthieThey can provide a wedding choir. Chansons' members are drawn from Perthshire, Fife and Angus. Entry is by audition and soloists are normally drawn from within the group. Chansons can appear as a chamber choir of 12-16 voices or as a choir of over 30 for larger choral works.

The School of Music aims to provide an all-round musical education and to broaden students' horizons whilst at the same time building on their talents and special interests. The courses we offer provide the training and experience necessary for entry into careers in all branches of musical performance and teaching.

Although the acquiring of a sound instrumental or vocal technique is fundamental to all our courses, the personal development of character, temperament, insight and sensitivity is an essential part of the Academy's approach to musical training.
